Suffolk County Bar Association is established.
January 3, 1770
The organization is founded by a dozen barristers and attorneys at meeting at the Bunch of Grapes Tavern, after meeting since February 1763 (1761-BBA). The oldest bar organization in today’s U.S., its founding precedes that of the Bar Association of the City of Boston (est. 1876*) and the Boston Bar Association (est. 1946*). John Adams is the first secretary (president). The group is dissolved in the 1830s when the legislature and courts assume responsibility for the licensing of lawyers.
